Episode #6 - Amy E. Lewis, Providence Perfume Company, Kristen Ferriera, OldPVD.com, & Anita Crackinstuff

Hello and welcome to Artclectic New England – this is Episode #6 – and it’s a program not about a particular style but a celebration of many…I’m your host, Dennise Kowalczyk.  This podcast was created to celebrate…spotlight…and elevate the variety of incredible arts, culture, lifestyle, and beauty found here in New England. Thanks for listening!

On today’s show, a chat with the Charna Ethier – owner and operator of the Providence Perfume Company…Anita Crackinstuff returns with her fun shenanigans, if you know what I mean…two new segments: Maureen Taylor of Oldpvd.com shares some background at a local landmark and local stand up comic, Kristen Ferreira shares her musings…music from local musician, Allyse Callery…..

But first, my interview with local author, Amy Lewis.  The two of us met through Frequency Writers and, as it turns out, we are both members of What Cheer Writers Club – so Rhode Island. I love it.  Amy is a bit of a renaissance woman.  She is a writer, tarot card reader, and basically, all around great gal. We talked about the book that needs to be written, porn, and the meeting of the muse… You can learn more about Amy’s work in the world by visiting askevelynarcher.com.

Next up, a new segment:  WTF – What the Ferreira  - Kristen Ferreira, local comic and cat lover, who will give us some insight as to where the people of Rhode Island have been over the past few weeks. Hint: it's not at the beach.

I am excited to share that Maureen Taylor, The Photo Detective and the person behind Oldpvd.com is a new contributor to Artclectic New England. The segment features bite-size bits of Providence history that you might not know. This month, Maureen shares a story about a shiny dome that once dominated the skyline and was compared to a famous Italian landmark.

Maureen Taylor, The Photo Detective created OldPVD.com, a geo-referencing project with crowdsourcing capabilities, to document the history of Providence, RI. It is for anyone interested in the history of Providence and serves as a tool for preservationists, historians, and educators. OldPVD.com is free, available for anyone to use and contribute to – check it out!

Did you know that Providence is home to a fabulous perfumery?  The Providence Perfume Company is owned and operated by Charna Ethier.  I met her through a mutual friend and her number one, Sarah Fish.  The store is located over near Wayland Square in Providence and offers a gorgeous selection of organic and natural scents.  Charna and I recently met in the studio at What Cheer Writers Club to talk about the art of making perfume.

Thank goodness gracious, Anita Crackinstuff is baaaaack, if you know I mean. I sure did miss her shenanigans on Let’s Save the Laughter for After! Today, a yak fest with the Lenny Schwartz who is the multi-faceted, driven, and prolific playwright/producer of Daydream Theatre. And, you can get your tickets for the next show, Seduction of the Innocent at the Daydream Theatre, by the way. The cast is always talented and cool as Sam's Hill, and word on the street is, it is likely to get just as many awards as Hamilton…plus, anyone who has lived in Providence in the United States, Italy, Cuba, or most countries that celebrate public art, knows of Bert Crenca. His artwork is dazzling Providence, down near Waterfire, it was at Rhode Island Housing in Providence, and his workcontinues to evolve. Bert shares information about Nico Bella's, where some of his masterpieces can be found. He also discusses his musical passion and anyone who knows of him will be riveted.

Anita Crackinstuff is looking forward to next month's episode of Artclectic New England, where she will interview Marybeth Meehan, whose photo journalistic portraits grace the buildings of Providence and each of the portrayed traveled in order to land in Rhode Island. Other celebrities of New England will be included, as usual, if you know what I mean.

I am pleased to share that Artclectic New England is supported in part by a grant from the Department of Art, Culture, + Tourism. Thank you, City of Providence!

I also want to announce that Artclectic New England has a new community partner: The New Bedford Symphony Orchestra.  The arts organization has been providing access to classical music for over 100 years! I’ll include a link in the show notes so you can check it out. In the meantime, the first person who can answer the following question, and follow the instructions in the show notes, wins a pair of tickets to their Holiday Pops show taking place on Saturday, December 14.  Now here are the questions:  What was the name of the building named in Maureen’s history segment and when was it built? Once you have the answer, check the show notes for instructions. The first person who successfully gets the correct answer to me gets the tickets.

Thanks to Maureen of oldpvd.com, Amy Lewis, Kristen Ferreira, Charna of The Providence Perfume Company and the ever-delightful, Anita Crackinstuff for contributing to this month’s show . I would love to hear from you, dear listener – comments and questions – if you got some, send them on over to artclecticNE@gmail.com or leave some comments on the show page.

Thanks so much for listening and if you enjoyed today’s show, please share the link with all of your friends on social media.

I’m going to end the show some music by Allysen Callery from Bristol, RI and Motif Magazine’s Best Female Vocalist for 2019.  Check the show notes for the link to learn more about her work.   This song is a track from her 2013 album title, Mumblin’ Sue and this track is, “Lily of the Valley”.
Have a great day and thanks for listening!
