Episode #11 - Jenny Currier, Girls Rock RI, Dave Ursillo

Hello and welcome to Artclectic New England – this is Episode #11 -- it’s a program not about a particular style but a celebration of many…I’m your host, Dennise Kowalczyk.

When I moved to RI from OR in 2018, I was over the moon to discover a community filled with arts, culture, lifestyle and adventure.

This podcast was created to celebrate…spotlight…and elevate the variety of incredible arts, culture, lifestyle, and beauty found here in New England. One of the reasons I moved to RI – sight unseen – was found in that research. Arts, culture, and the humanities are as important as sunshine and refreshing air to breathe to many who live here. It is my intention to explore and share some of my discoveries with you – the listener – so thanks for tuning in!

On today’s show, Maureen Taylor of Oldpvd.com shares some background on the  iconic structure, Temple of Music, and local stand-up comic, Kristen Ferreira shares her musings about living the new normal…I’ll also be sharing some music by Eric and The Nothin …and, I offer two interviews this month: a chat with local foodie and writer, Jenny Currier…..But first, my conversation with Rikki Davis – they are one of the co-directors at Girls Rock Rhode Island.  We talked about the camps offered by the nonprofit and a big reveal, too.

If you want to tour the space, sign up for camp, or volunteer – be sure to check out the link below.

Next up, WTF – that is, What the Ferreira?! – it is a segment featuring Kristen Ferreira, local comic and cat lover, who shares some of her insights about living in Rhode Island. Today, a reflection on the new normal.

Next up: curse words, oysters and all things Greek.  Jenny Currier is a freelance writer, food tour guide, and publications coordinator at Brown University.  She was a finalist for the 2019 International Association for Culinary Professions Food Writing Award.  Her work has appeared in Motif Magazine, the Boston Globe, the Sunlight Press, and Vagabond Magazine.

Next up. Olive oil and music combine to give us an Oldpvd landmark,  the iconic Temple of Music in Roger Williams Park. You know Providence draws in people to visit, well so did the dedication of the Benedict Temple of Music. Opera, the Marine Band and a Chorus made it the place to be on a September Day. Maureen gives us a few details in this episode of Oldpvd.com.

Maureen Taylor, The Photo Detective created OldPVD.com, a geo-referencing project with crowdsourcing capabilities, to document the history of Providence, RI. It is your place to share photos and memories of Providence. What used to be (and in some cases, still is).  Can’t go out? Take a virtual stroll through the city by visiting oldpvd.com.

And, now this month’s 7 & 7 – 7 questions in 7 minutes featuring another podcast.  This month, I welcome Dave Ursillo of Written, Spoken Person.  Both of us are members of What Cheer Writers Club.

That’s all I have for this month’s show - Thanks to Rikki Davis of Girls Rock Rhode Island, Jenny Currier, Maureen of oldpvd.com, Kristen Ferreira for contributing to this month’s show. Thanks to Dave Ursillo, too. I would love to hear from you, dear listener – comments and questions – if you got some, send them on over to artclecticNE@gmail.com.

Thanks so much for listening and if you enjoyed today’s show, please share the link with all of your friends on social media.

I’m going to end the show some music by local band – Eric and the Nothing with Watch You Go….and, due to the hunkering down, be sure to support our local musicians by checking out their facebook pages for live performances.

Have a great day and thanks for listening!
